We had a blast training for and running the 10k here in Killarney. What a gorgeous day, we got very lucky on the day of with the weather. We are so thankful for the memories. Well done Run Killarney for an excellent event and thank you to the excellent volunteers for your incredible support. You made us all shine.

We had a blast at the Killarney escape room where we celebrated 11’s birthday. We had 15 minutes to spare on the clock. Waiting for a cab afterward we noticed people coming from an unmarked door with different grocery items. I was thirsty so we explored what turned out to be a well stocked Polish grocery store. After nine months of mourning the impossibility of finding Masa in Ireland. I found it there in that grocery store and marked gluten free. Amazing day.

Just stunning this morning at the Valentia Island lighthouse. The old fortification walls, carved stone steps, the islands just distant enough to come across in purples and pinks, and the waves breaking with such force against this furthest point of land in the ocean are awe inspiring.

We left Kingsmill in Williamsburg VA, where we had

We left Kingsmill in Williamsburg VA, where we had lodged for about eight months after arriving with no real idea of how long we would be staying. We were completely dependent on the approval of our Irish work permit.
It was a beautiful area that afforded a lot of slow paced quiet time. Our favorite restaurant in the area is Food for Thought, we were impressed by their consistency of service and quality. Our favorite cafe was Column 15; lovely atmosphere, well made drinks.
Kingsmill itself is a once luxurious property in its twilight years. They’ve turned so much of the green space into housing that the golf experience is more suburban than natural. Their main restaurant can’t be mistaken for functioning most days. We found all of the employees to be lovely and to provide unusually excellent service. You could make managers of any one of the people who regularly cared for us from the restaurants to the front desk. Our guess is that this type of institution is in its twilight and they are caught between the reality that people won’t or can’t pay more to stay and that they themselves can’t afford, at the rate currently charged, to keep the buildings in good repair and to keep the restaurants, housekeeping, front desk and maintenance crew appropriately staffed.
Analysis aside, we feel very lucky to have stayed in our rooms with their beautiful lake views and comfortable furnishings. I hope we are wrong and that the mill makes a full comeback as we’d love to wander back there someday.

On the downside I’ve been in bed for most of two

On the downside I’ve been in bed for most of two weeks after a surgery then a severe allergic reaction. Poor Tim has had to do so much! I added the appropriate flair to his shirt considering he was working at night after taking care of everything all day. On the upside I’ve much enjoyed the times that I am able to sketch. I thought I’d share a couple from this past week.

11 and I had almost seven full days to ourselves while the rest of the family visited out west. It was so hard to say goodbye to everybody else but I am thankful that I had this time to really connect with 11. One of the activities we enjoyed were lego challenges. I ran Lego challenges a lot when the big kids were 4 and 5 and had first started homeschooling. Lego challenges are a fabulous mixed age classroom activity because each child can pull together their own knowledge and skills to make their entry and it is so easy to scale the difficulty to keep it challenging. Beyond that, aren’t legos with your children just one of the best ways to spend quality time?

11 knocked this butternut squash from its display amongst the fall gourds which are sitting pretty until cooking and crafting. He knocked the stem just right to draw out some of the liquid. I gave a face to the gourd and now he is peeved, feeling that he is being intentionally guilted. I, however, am fully convinced that loving teasing is a vital part of building patient, confident little people and I take my job very. . . seriously.

It does look like it’s crying though, doesn’t it?

We celebrated our twelve year anniversary tonight.

We celebrated our twelve year anniversary tonight. 9 made the loveliest sign and Tim rented a golf cart for the evening. The big kids ended up too tired to babysit but we were able to talk them into a photo shoot. We had so much fun. We had started out looking for a tuxedo shirt and a cheap veil for the evening as that sounded fun. The costume shop didn’t have any, so we ended up steam punk. There’s nothing more fun than a tangent with my honey.
