The Battle of Sedgemoor

The Battle of Sedgemoor was a rebellion led by James Scott, who was the Duke of Monmouth. The rebel-crushing Battle of Sedgemoor happened in 1685. Because the rebels wanted a protestant king, they boldly attempted to overthrow King Charles II. Since the Duke of Monmouth would have taken King Charles II’s place on the throne, the king eventually had Monmouth executed. The Marlborough 300 event at Blenheim Palace includes a reenactment of the battle of Sedgemoor, horse racing and more. The reenactment and activities are a fun experience.

The Battle of Sedgemoor was the crushing of a rebellion led by James Scott, who was the Duke of Monmouth. It happened in 1685. The battle was a bloody massacre of mainly untrained smallholders and cloth workers. The smallholders and cloth workers rallied to the support of the Duke of Monmouth who surprisingly wanted more than to just be a Duke. In fact, he wanted to become King! Since the Duke of Monmouth, James Scott, wanted to be king, he rebelled. The workers rallied to his support, because they wanted a protestant king on the throne, not the catholic king. However, the rebellion failed and James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, was executed.

The good-quality reenactment at Blenheim Palace, located in Woodstock, is immersively fun, especially for kids. Its name is the Marlborough 300 Pageant. The Pageant is interactive, with “Living History” encampments, which include actors who can tell you interesting bits of history, let you hold muskets and more. As the event lasts all day, there is a reenactment, horse race, food and more. Because there are many food trucks you have several options when looking for a bite to eat. The reenactment is an exciting, good-quality experience.

The Marlborough 300 Pageant is an interactively exciting experience which is suitable for children and has delicious food options. There is a horse race that you can bet on. As for the reenactment, you can expect muskets and cavalry charges. However, since these noises are loud, they might not be suitable for young children. Because the reenactment is of a time when there was a king, children can have fun doing a drill for the king’s army. The Marlborough 300 Pageant is an exceptionally exciting experience and a good representation of the battle of Sedgemoor.
